Making Cardiff a Gold-Standard Sustainable Food City

Did you know that Cardiff is part of a network of Sustainable Food Places across the UK?

This network brings together pioneering food partnerships from towns, cities, boroughs, districts and counties across the UK that are driving innovation and best practice on all aspects of healthy and sustainable food.

Here the Welsh capital, our food partnership operates under the name Food Cardiff. Food Cardiff was established in 2014, and acts as a hub that connects the people and projects working to promote healthy, environmentally sustainable and ethical food. During the last ten years Food Cardiff has developed and grown significantly, making a recognisable impact citywide. You can read more about Food Cardiff’s work to date here.

Like us, Food Cardiff believes that the food we eat has a huge impact on life in Cardiff – not just on people’s health, but on communities and businesses, farmers and food producers, and the environment too.

Like us, Food Cardiff believes that good food can create strong, healthy, resilient communities; our Enterprise Manager even sits on Food Cardiff’s Volunteer Strategy Board, helping to support the partnership’s strategic direction, and offer guidance on how to further develop and enhance its success.

Going for Gold

Back in 2021, Food Cardiff achieved Silver Sustainable Food Places status for Cardiff, making the first place in Wales and one of only six places in the UK to achieve the prestigious accolade. But later this year, Food Cardiff will be submitting a new award entry, hoping to gain Gold Sustainable Food Places status for the city - certifying Cardiff as one of the most sustainable cites in the UK.

To help them reach this goal, they are asking individuals, groups and businesses to ‘make a pledge’ to support this mission. From committing to using a reusable cup when you pop out for coffee, deciding to try growing your own food at home, or starting to source more of your fruit and veg from local farmers markets (like ours!) there are loads of ideas for actions you can take to make a difference.

It is hoped that in the act of making a pledge, people of Cardiff will be empowered to co-create a thriving local food economy, where everyone has access to food that is both healthy, and environmentally sustainable.

If you would like to add your voice to the campaign, click here to register with Food Cardiff and once you are logged in, simply click on ‘make a pledge’.

Whether you commit to doing something big or small, it all adds up.
