New Season Fruit & Veg at Cardiff Farmers Markets

This month, it would be impossible not to notice the shift in the seasons, as new season fruit & veg starts to appear on our market stalls. We caught up with Pawel Wisniewski from Paul’s Organic Veg to get the latest news from his 17 acre plot just outside Abergavenny - and find out what’s in store at the markets this month and beyond.

“April and the beginning of May are the hardest times for farmers - especially growers, so we are really looking forward to the changes over the next few weeks and months.”

“At the markets right now, it’s all about greens - the spinach, chard, lettuce, mixed salad, kohlrabi and fennel are all looking great at the moment, and we’ve had a bumper crop of rhubarb, too.

But by far the biggest crop for us in April and May is asparagus- people go mad for asparagus season! It usually only lasts for around 6 - 8 weeks, weather depending.

As well as harvesting, we are busy planting at the farm. Next month we’ll plant our cucumbers, peppers, chillies and aubergines in the polytunnel.

Excitingly, our beautiful strawberries are growing well; our inside crop should be available at the market by the end of May, provided we get some good sun. Our outside crop will take a while longer, and there’ll be gooseberries and raspberries on their way as well.

Every week we’ve got more and more coming through. Spring is an exciting time on the farm - and at the markets too.”
