Organic September at Cardiff Farmers Markets

This month is Organic September - a month-long campaign which aims to raise awareness of organic products, and the brands, producers and farmers who bring them to us in the UK.

Foods labelled as organic must meet strict regulations on how they have been grown and produced, and it is now widely accepted that organic methods of farming can bring big benefits for climate, nature and our health. They do this by:

1. Supporting wildlife & biodiversity
On average, plant, insect and bird life is up to 50% more abundant on certified organic farms. In essence, #OrganicSeptember celebrates the hard work and dedication that goes into growing in a way that works with nature, instead of against it.

2. Maintaining higher standards of animal welfare
Animals raised organically enjoy the highest certified welfare standards available in the UK. These standards insist that animals are given plenty of space and fresh air, and that they are raised in conditions that suit their natural behaviour. Smaller flocks and herds, and more access to the outdoors means organic animals don't have to be routinely treated with antibiotics and wormers.

3. Reducing our exposure to pesticides
Organic standards prohibit GM crops and ingredients, hydrogenated fats, and controversial artificial foods colours and preservatives. Choosing organic is an easy way to limit exposure to pesticides, herbicides (weedkillers) and many additives and preservatives.

Celebrate Organic September at Cardiff Farmers’ Markets

If you’re looking to incorporate more organic produce into your diet, you’ll find that many of our farmers and producers are certified organic, including…

  • Coed Organic - growing organic fruit, veg and salad on 5 acres in the Vale of Glamorgan.

  • Paul’s Organic Veg - home grown, organic vegetables and fruits from their farm near Abergavenny.

  • Penrhiw Organic - organically reared beef, lamb, mutton, pork, chicken and eggs produced on a family farm.

Many of our other traders also make use of local, organic ingredients in their products and offerings. One such trader is Ty Caws, an independent cheesemonger on a mission to provide the very best of British Cheese to all.
