Cardiff Farmers Markets join the Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival
The annual Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival runs from 10th September to 18th October, with dozens of events planned across the city.
Community groups, schools, gardens and businesses will run a wide range of events centred around cooking, sharing and growing food; many events this autumn will focus on how communities are coming together to help people access healthy and nutritious food through the cost of living crisis.
As part of the Autumn Festival programme, our Riverside, Roath and Rhiwbina Farmers Markets will be hosting three, free workshops across the weekend of 14th - 16th October - covering growing microgreens at home, and using local, organic veg to make nutritious smoothies.
Rhiwbina: On Friday October 14th at 11 am, Regan Heatley from SOL Nutrition will be talking about organic food and health, and making a variety of smoothies using organic veg from our markets.
Roath: On Saturday October 15th at 11am, Amanda Wood from Urban Vertical CIC will be holding a workshop to explain how to get started growing microgreens at home - and why it’s of benefit.
Riverside: On Sunday October 16th at 11am, Amanda will be at Fitzhammon Embankment delivering the same workshop.
All events at our markets are free to join - just come along!
You can also view the full Autumn Festival programme and browse the rest of the events going on around the city on the Food Cardiff website.
About food cardiff
Food Cardiff was established in 2014 as one of the founding Sustainable Food Places in the UK. During the last seven years, it has developed and grown significantly, making a recognisable impact city-wide. In 2021, Cardiff achieved Silver Sustainable Food Places status, becoming the first place in Wales and one of only six places in the UK to achieve the prestigious accolade.
Pearl Costello is the Food Cardiff coordinator. She said:
“Our autumn festival is an opportunity for communities, schools and local businesses to come together over good food. It’s a chance to look at how we become a healthier, more sustainable city, and also for communities to tackle some of the big issues we face more immediately.
“Previous festivals have targeted issues such as food insecurity, loneliness and social isolation in the wake of the pandemic. These issues are still there, and are now being exacerbated by the cost of living crisis. It’s vital that everyone involved in the food system in the city has opportunities to reach people and communities in need and have help to access affordable, nutritious food.
“The festival is a celebration of the growing good food movement in the city and, more importantly, a chance for anyone to learn more about what they eat and build their skills in cooking and growing food.”

All of the events in the festival support Food Cardiff’s Good Food Strategy for the city which sets out five food goals - a healthy Cardiff; an environmentally sustainable Cardiff; a thriving local economy; a fair and connected food system; and an empowering food movement.
This is the third Good Food Cardiff Autumn Festival organised by Food Cardiff to support and promote the city-wide mission to make Cardiff one of the UK’s most Sustainable Food Cities. More than 5,000 people have been involved in events over the previous autumn festivals, with more than 5,000 vegetable plants distributed, and hundreds of meals cooked and shared together.
