Students raise funds for Amnesty International at Cardiff Farmers Markets

A group of students at Cardiff University are raising money for Amnesty International this year by completing a range of different challenges, with the ultimate challenge being a Mount Kilimanjaro climb in August 2023.

Their fundraising has taken all sorts of forms - from organising pub quizzes, to collecting money at tube stations in London, running plant sales, giving talks in schools, completing running challenges and holding world cup sweep stakes; one individual walked all the way from her house in Swansea to Cardiff in 19 hours!

Why are they raising money for Amnesty International?

Amnesty International are a charity that advocate for human rights across the world.

Some of Amnesty’s current campaigns include Ukraine Migration Support - where their crisis investigators in Ukraine document human rights abuses as they happen. With this evidence they are working with the UK government to ensure anyone fleeing Ukraine is given protection without discrimination - and the Qatar World Cup; evidence from Amnesty’s on ground researchers revealed the dangerous exploitation of migrant workers, which was estimated to have resulted in 6500 deaths. They are campaigning to strengthen the Workers’ Welfare Standards to increase protection to migrant workers.

Fundraising at Cardiff Farmers Markets

Over the coming months you’ll be able to spot various stalls at our weekly markets, where these students plan to sell a range of items to further their fundraising efforts (including soaps and houseplants), and run a few raffles too! Keep an eye out for them over the coming weeks and months.
