World Renowned Musician N’famady Kouyaté Plays Roath Market!

  • Roath Farmers Market Cardiff, Wales, CF24 3JW United Kingdom (map)

Join us for a celebration of music from Guinea with world renowned musician N’famady Kouyaté. Born into a griot family - a West African bardic tradition, N’famady has a guardianship responsibility for preserving traditional culture through the sharing of ancient rhythms, songs, stories, and music. As an infant N’famady started to play Balafon, learning from his mother and father, then djembe and drums in the traditional ballet groups of Conakry, the capital of Guinea. He later joined various theatre, circus, and orchestral groups for festival tours across Africa and has played across Europe.

The balafon is sacred in Guinean culture and is traditionally played during ceremonial celebrations, carnivals, and community festivals. The first balafon was discovered by the King of Susu, Soumaoro Kanté (11th century of the Ancient African Empire), and it was given to the griot Bala Fassèké Kouyaté. The Kouyatés have been a significant family of griots for generations. N'famady is a direct descendant, and one of the stars of the succession of the Mandingue.

N'famady will be playing throughout the day. Join us for some fabulous music whilst you enjoy the market!
